The format

What goes in an llms.txt file

An llms.txt is a Markdown file at the root of your site, as proposed at llmstxt.org. It has four parts, and only the first is required.

How to add an llms.txt to your website

Four steps, and the generator does the first.

    Paste your address at the top of this page. The file is built from your own pages' titles and descriptions, so read it through before you publish it.

    Edit it

    Add a paragraph of plain facts under the summary, remove pages nobody needs, and make sure every note says what its page is for.

    Upload it to your site's root

    Save it as llms.txt, in plain text, in the same folder as your robots.txt, so it opens at yoursite.com/llms.txt. If your website builder cannot add files there, look for an llms.txt option in its SEO settings or in an SEO plugin.

Questions about llms.txt

What is an llms.txt file?
An llms.txt file is a short Markdown file at the root of a website, at yoursite.com/llms.txt, that tells AI assistants and language models what the site is and which of its pages matter: a name, a one-line summary and a list of links with a note on each. It was proposed in 2024 at llmstxt.org, as a companion to robots.txt and sitemap.xml.

Do ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini or Perplexity read llms.txt?
Not reliably, today. llms.txt is a proposal, not a standard, and none of the major assistants has said it uses the file to decide what to answer. It is read mostly by AI tools that are pointed at a site, such as coding assistants reading documentation. It costs little to publish and can only help, but being named in AI answers takes more: pages that say plainly what you offer, and crawlers allowed to read them.

Does llms.txt help SEO?
Not directly: it is not a ranking factor for Google or any other search engine. What it gives the AI tools that read it is a short, accurate account of your site in your own words. For search and AI answers alike, what counts is pages that say plainly what you offer, for whom and where, and crawlers that are allowed to read them.

How do I create an llms.txt file?
Paste your web address into the generator at the top of this page. It reads your homepage and your sitemap, picks your key pages and writes the file from their titles and descriptions. Edit it, then copy it or download it as llms.txt. You can also write one by hand: a # line with your name, a > line with a summary, and ## sections of links.

Where do I put llms.txt?
At the root of your website, in the same folder as robots.txt, so it opens at yoursite.com/llms.txt. Upload it as a plain text file, not as a page that shows its text.

What is the difference between llms.txt, robots.txt and sitemap.xml?
robots.txt tells crawlers what they may read. sitemap.xml lists your pages for search engines. llms.txt picks the pages that matter and says what each one is, in words a language model can use. They work together: an llms.txt helps only the crawlers your robots.txt lets in.

What is llms-full.txt?
A companion file some sites publish next to llms.txt, with the full text of their key pages in one Markdown file, so a model can read everything at once. It suits documentation sites more than most businesses. This generator writes llms.txt.

How does the generator choose the pages?
It takes the pages your homepage links to first, then the ones in your sitemap: your main pages, then a section for each folder with a few pages each, and your legal pages under Optional, up to thirty links in your homepage's language. Pages that are gone, or that ask not to be indexed, are left out. Every title and description is your own.

Is the llms.txt generator free?
Yes. It is free, needs no account and takes a few seconds. Each visitor can generate ten files an hour, and a file is kept for ten minutes, so a site is not read twice in a row.
